This book is a very difficult book to read. The difficult part is not the reading (which may be complicated too) but the forming your opinion part. It is such a famous book. At the beginning, it is very difficult to express your opinion as you haven’t met Jay Gatsby yet. Basically, at the beginning you’re confused, but you quickly get over it.
THE GREAT GATSBY, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s third book, stands as the supreme achievement of his career. This exemplary novel of the Jazz Age has been acclaimed by generations of readers. The story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan, of lavish parties on Long Island at a time when The New York Times noted “gin was the national drink and sex the national obsession,” it is an exquisitely crafted tale of America in the 1920s.-Goodreads
At the beginnig of the book we are shown Nick and what he wants to do with his life. he decides he wants to go East and sell bonds on Wall Street. When he gets to West Egg he rents a apartment just next to a mansion in which the great Gatsby -famous for his amazing Saturday parties- lives. He goes to visit his cousin, Daisy, and little by little all of them are mixed-up in an intricate life.
Nick Carraway is the main character of the book. He is basically strange. At the beginnig of the book he reveals that he doesn’t oftenly judge people from their apearances as his father taught him that not everyone has had as many oportunities in life as he will have. Even after this he has to go through this part of his life to realise that indeed not everyone is who they seem. He does judge a lot of people throughout this book. At the beginnig he calls himself an honest man but his character develops and changes so much he ends up not being such a good man at all.
His character development is not exactly what you would call a change for the best. He changes to become exactly what surrounds him -which he often critizes- and ends up being very judgmental. He is changes his opinion about some people very often. Sometimes he believes Gatsby is plain stupid and then he believes he is his God and best friend. Just plain strange. Also, throughout the whole book it seemed as if the story had nothing to do about him but at the end he just gets caught up by it and it’s his fault. I didn’t exactly always like Nick.
Dasiy was very funny at times and I liked her until I realised that she was too humane. She came across as the wife who was being cheated on and who was sad because she realised her daughter would live in the world of injustice she lives in. She said, “that’s the best a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.” It clearly shows her frustration as she knows she is being cheated on by her husband. She knows the only way she could’ve been happy would have been if she hadn’t known about it. It made me very sad, but then she totally messes up with Gatsby. I suppose that is humane, being frightened of her mistake and wanting to abandon it. It definitely wasn’t the correct thing to do, but at that time it would’ve seemed like the right thing to do for herself. I understood her wanting to have an affair with Gatsby if she loved him but then she totally abandons him.
Tom I hated. He was definitely an ass and he cheated on his wife which is disgraceful. He is also a horrible racist. “next they’ll throw everything overboard and have intermarriage between black and white.” The thing is here he was talking about Gatsby and how he didn’t deserve Daisy. But that comment was uncalled for cause no one in the room was even black!!! How can someone be so racist? That ia whn my hate for him blossomed. He also betrays Gatsby – there’s more hate on its way.
Gatsby. Jay Gatsby is a drug-dealer. I didn’t think that was possible but it obviously was. At the beginnig I didn’t like him; I felt sorry for him cause he lived alone in a huge mansion. I knew he had to feel lonely. But little by little I started liking him more as you learn what he has had to go through in his life to accomplish what he most desired: wealth to marry Daisy. He didn’t marry her but he did get wealthy and he began to change into this souless person who only cared about the money. Again I felt bad for him as during the end he only wants to protect his love and ends up being betrayed. I felt really sorry for him.
The writing is amazing and I fell in love with the way Nick (the main character) described other people. For example when Nick describes his cousin’s -Daisy- voice, “It was the kind of voice that the ear follows up and down as if each speech is an arragement of notes that will never be played again.”He seemed hypnothised by her voice and at some point it made me question if they were actually cousins. The writing is beautiful during the whole book.
The whole book is about wealth and what it does to you. Just being around wealthy people completely changed Nick so imagine what it did to Gatsby. It breaks people and relations and everything. Gatsby lost all of his friends for that. Nick changes and becomes just what his father told him to beware, a judgmental person. It totally makes you rethink your life and think if you want to become like them, willing to risk everything for the money. Gatsby’s heart and soul are described as the following, “ghostly heart” and ” his heart was in constant, turbulent riot.” If that does not repel you I don’t know what will. It definitely makes me feel sad for this person who seems as if he doesn’t have a heart, but I do know he had one before. Before he got money or even thought about it.
The fact that I disliked so many of the characters was really fun as I could hate them happily in my own mind. At some points the book was extremely funny like when Gatsby escapes the house before seeing Daisy. It was just hilarious. Even when he falls off a flight of stairs cause he won’t stop looking at Daisy. I did like it and so I gave it 4 out of 5 stars. I did not give it a 5 out of 5 stars because I didn’t exactly love it. I think anyone should read this book, even if you don’t end up liking it: it will definitely change your way of thinking about many things in the world.
